Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games ! Villars !

From 9 to 22 January 2020, Lausanne is organising the 3rd Winter Youth Olympic Games. Lausanne succeeds Innsbruck (2012) and Lillehammer (2016) as the venue of this unique event where the young athletes of tomorrow stand out in their discipline and shine throughout the world.
During these games, the best athletes aged 15 to 18 from more than 70 nations around the world will compete for Olympic medals at the various host venues in Switzerland and neighbouring France.

The resort of Villars, with its ample experience in organising national and international competitions, has been chosen to host the ski cross, snowboard cross and ski mountaineering events!

"Faster, higher, stronger" has been the motto of the Olympic Committee since its creation!
Surpassing oneself and strong emotions are on the programme of these games which await us with great moments of sporting achievement!

In Villars, athletes from the disciplines of ski mountaineering, ski cross and snowboard cross will compete for the title of Junior Olympic Champion!

Ski mountaineering: this technical and demanding sport combines the balanced mastery of skiing and mountaineering. On routes with a significant difference in altitude both uphill and downhill, athletes alternate moments of carrying their equipment, gliding, or climbing walls equipped with crampons.
The competitions in sprint and individual format will be especially exciting for the spectators!

Did you know? Ski mountaineering is present as an Olympic winter discipline for the first time.

Ski cross and snowboard cross:
On a fast course with alternating bumps, jumps and raised turns, the athletes compete in a pool of 4 to cross the finish line as winners. The competitions consist of the qualifications, the semi-finals, the small and the big final. Enough to guarantee suspense to the last hundredth of a second!

Did you know? World champion and Olympic ski cross medallist Fanny Smith is from Villars! She is an ambassador for the Youth Olympic Games!

Passing the Olympic flame

Passing the Olympic flame

The Olympic flame stops over in Villars on 30 December 2019!

Last September, the Olympic flame was lit in Athens, the cradle of the Olympic Games. Since its arrival in Switzerland, the flame has travelled all over the country, visiting each canton as well as Les Tuffes in neighbouring France.

10 days before the start of the competitions, you can now see the flame as it passes through Villars!

During the Youth Olympic Games, Villars will come alive to make this fortnight of the Olympic Games festive!

On every competition day, concerts will take place in Bretaye (on the slopes) and on the Place du Marché for the après-ski party!

The competitions will also be broadcast on the big screen at the Villars market square so no-one has to miss anything!
