Our top 10 for a cool summer

Enjoy a cool summer

Our top 10

The heatwave returns and you may be looking for something to do to escape the intense heat. We suggest you take to the heights and go off to explore the 10 places that offer you a cool environment and a change of scenery.

When the cooling fans are working full pelt and the air-conditioning is overheating, this is the time to go and take a breath of fresh air.
It is always cool in the mountains of course. At a turn in the water course, at the foot of a waterfall, at the start of a high-altitude hike, reaching a summit, in the clear water of a mountain lake, or even in the meanders of underground passages.

Whether you are looking for the ideal hike when the weather is intensely hot, a pleasant place to spend time with your children in the shade this summer, or a cool and calm location right in the mountains, our region in the heart of the Vaud Alps will provide what you need.

Glacier 3000

Glacier 3000

Naturally cool all year round, at Glacier 3000 you will find the ideal temperatures when the thermometers are running high in our towns and cities.
Once you dismount from the cable car, you can take a deep breath of fresh air from the Peak Walk, the suspension bridge at the summit of the Vaud Alps.
To find some peace and quiet, you can set off on the Glacier Walk trail, a hike in the snow that is accessible for everyone, to arrive at the Refuge de l'Espace restaurant and its breathtaking viewing point.

The Gorges of Avançon

The Gorges of Avançon

Follow the flow of the water of the gorges of Avançon, which runs between the trees of our green forests. You will enjoy hiking along a shaded trail which takes you to the Valley of Nant and its protected nature reserve.

To cool down, dip your hand into the crystal waters of the river.

WINE ESTATE CELLAR

WINE ESTATE CELLAR

The vineyards of Ollon and Bex are located on hillsides facing due south. The savoir-faire of our vintners in cultivating vines in terrains that are often steep, makes the Chablais wines unique, creating grape varieties with a fruity and authentic aroma.
In the heat of a summer day, you can set off and discover the best of what the soil and hard work can offer you: tasting wine in the coolness of a passionate winemaker’s cellar.

Mountain Lakes

Mountain Lakes

The Alpes vaudoises are also well known for their high-altitude lakes. The nuances of colours reflecting on the surface of the water are inspired by the nature surrounding it; from the green of the fir trees to the grey of the rocks or the blue of the sky. It is always worth taking a detour and removing your trainers to test the coolness of an alpine lake.
Why not go and do some fishing or enjoy a dip in the temperate water?

THE WATERFALL AT DAR

THE WATERFALL AT DAR

What could be more cooling than a waterfall from an alpine glacier? Can you already feel the coolness of this crystal water on your feet or hands, after warming up on a hike or a via ferrata climbing route? The waterfall at Dar, which offers two successive cascades of water, each of 70 metres, will provide you with a welcome spray to offer respite during the heat of a sweltering summer day.

THE MOUNTAIN CABIN AT PIERREDAR

THE MOUNTAIN CABIN AT PIERREDAR

Perched at an altitude of almost 2,300 metres, the mountain cabin at Pierredar looks down over the Valley of Ormonts. Look up and you will notice the Glacier 3000 Peak Walk. The mountain cabin at Pierredar is a welcome destination point or stage of a hike. If you are looking for temperatures a few degrees cooler and an escape from the busier trails, you are in luck. You repeatedly cross several watercourses, an opportunity to cool off and walk with confidence on some snow preserved by the glacier.

LAKE FRIENCE

LAKE FRIENCE

In the background, the Argentine massif and its surprisingly smooth face. There is a lake here at an altitude of more than 1,500 metres, which brings a little coolness when the temperatures are rising in the high summer. It is also a pleasant place in an ideal setting to visit as a family or with friends.

ON THE SUMMIT

ON THE SUMMIT

Once you are on the summit, there are numerous viewing points for contemplating the panoramas which are both unique and magnificent. It takes some effort to climb the mountain but the reward makes it worthwhile! Also, the temperature goes down with the increasing altitude. The sweet sensation of coolness that greets you when you arrive there is superb.
This summer, visit the summit of Grand Chamossaire in Villars, the summit of Chaux in Gryon, the summit of La Palette in Diablerets, or the summit of the Argentine in Bex.

THE SALT MINES OF BEX

THE SALT MINES OF BEX

With temperatures of 18° C in all seasons inside, the salt mines of Bex present an ideal opportunity for a cultural excursion under cover when the heat of the sun is intense. Immerse yourself in a maze of underground passageways many kilometres long. The mines have been worked for several centuries to extract the precious local resource of "Sel des Alpes". This salt is used to season your dishes, but it is also to be found in many body care products, or in the healing water of the Riversong wellbeing area in Plans-sur-Bex.

THE FOUNTAINS IN OLLON

THE FOUNTAINS IN OLLON

The picturesque village of Ollon is located at the foot of the mountain, and it enjoys a superb climate with a gentle lifestyle that almost feels Southern European.
Take a delightful stroll and look at the historical buildings that are clustered around its traditional bell tower. Vineyards line the sunny slopes all around the village. The water from springs that flow as far as Ollon fills 13 fountains and this spring water will refresh you on your way.

Villars Golf Course

Villars Golf Course

Enjoy a round of golf at an altitude of 1,600 to try and improve your swing, with Mont-Blanc in your line of vision.
A unique 18-hole course in the Vaud Alps, Villars golf course is ideal for golf enthusiasts who are looking for a sporting course far from the heat of the plain.

With almost 65 million players in the world, golf is one of the most practised individual leisure activities worldwide. Whatever your age or physical condition, playing golf is a continuous activity that is suitable for all.
